*****Supplies*****Parents, for the next couple of months in Social Studies, we will be studying Westward Movement, Settlement, Gold Rush and Wild West. To help with some of our upcoming projects, I am asking you to please send in any Styrofoam egg cartons, ½ gallon paper milk/juice cartons (no plastic),and 2-liter soda bottles as/if they become available in your households.

Spelling Homework Spelling Pattern:
The sound /k/: can be spelled k, c, or ck List A: junk, carpet, socket, kangaroo, corner, picnic, ticket, candle, bucket, creaky, attack, plastic, racket, attic, hockey
List B: (challenge) freckled, reckoned, speckled, beckoned, hammock, cardinal, cauliflower, continent, constellation, coyote, caterpillar, kidney, kayak, kaleidoscope, koala
Directions: You may choose any 3 assignments to do for homework that make a Tic-Tac-Toe. The assignments must be three in a row down, across, or diagonal. Please circle the activities that you choose and staple them to this paper when you turn them in on Friday. Have fun J | Making Riddles Write a riddle for each of your 10 pattern words. Don’t forget to add the answer to your riddles. Have someone at home try to figure out your riddles. | Memory Match Write your 5 high frequency words on cards (make two sets) and play “Memory Match” with someone. | Letter Writing Write a letter to a friend or relative using your 10 pattern words. Use proper letter format, and underline each pattern word. | | Computer Fun Type your 10 pattern words. Make each word have a different font. | FREE CHOICE Choose an idea from the additional spelling activities page | Spelling Math Figure out how much each of your 5 high frequency words is worth. A=1, B=2…Z=26 Write the word next to the value. | | Alphabetize Write your words in alphabetical order and then copy them in reverse alphabetical order. | Colorful Spelling Write your spelling words in marker or colored pencil. Write each consonant letter in red and each vowel in blue | Making Words Write your 10 pattern words. Next to each word, write at least two other words that can be spelled using the letters in your word. Example: pickle= lick, like, lip… | Additional Choices
1. Write the words and cross out all of silent letters. 2. Make a set of flashcards for studying your words. 3. Write each spelling word three times. 4. Write each spelling word in a rainbow of colors. Write the first word with a red crayon, the second with an orange crayon, the third with a yellow. Repeat the pattern once you finish with purple. 5. Find letters in a magazine or in the newspaper to spell out your words. Glue them to a piece of paper and turn in. 6. Spelling Math: Which spelling word has the highest value? Which word has the lowest value? Do any words have an equal value? A=1, B=2, C=3…Z=26, etc. 7. Use each spelling word in a sentence. Correct spelling and grammar count! 8. Take a practice test at home given by a parent. Write any missed word 3 times each. 9. Draw and color a picture. "Hide" the words in the picture. Please do not color over the words. 10. Write your spelling words on cards(make two sets) and play "Memory Match" with them against a sibling or parent. (Get a parent signature on your homework page) 11. Use a thesaurus to write a synonym for each word. 12. Write tongue twisters for using at least 12 of your spelling words. Example- spelling word: some- Sally saw some seals in the sea. 13. Use ALL of your spelling words to write a short story. Your story must include all of your spelling words. 14. Use a dictionary to write a definition for each word. (You can borrow a dictionary from school if you do not have one at home.)

Please continue to review the weekly assigned multiplication facts. The students who regularly study them have shown marked improvements and are doing very well in their math fact pages and on their homework.
Utah Studies: We are moving on to settlement in the West, Gold Rush and Wild West. Be sure to check out our growing Pioneer tribute outside our room now representing a typical pioneer village complete with Fort Bridger, log cabins, "soddys" and dugouts.
Science 3, 2, 1...We're off, to Space. Our next unit will be on our Solar System, hopefully enhanced by a trip to Hansen's Planetarium in Slat Lake sometime mid February. We always appreciate drivers who can help transport us there!
Geography
We have learned the British Isles and Northern Europe. Next we're studying Southern Europe.
